I started painting self-portraits trying to get it right. To capture an accurate likeness, to look the way I look. The more I painted, the more I realised that what ends up on the canvas is an interpretation, shaped by how I'm feeling, what I'm noticing, what I'm willing to see. These paintings trace that shift. The brushwork is loose and deliberate and the colour palettes were chosen intuitively. In this earlier piece the mask hides my face entirely. I painted anonymity without realising it.
